Abstract
To evaluate the alteration of purine nucleoside phosphorylase(PNP) activity of lymphocytes and helper/inducer and suppressor/cytotoxic T cells of peripheral blood in the patient with various cancer, We examined PNP activity and CD4+ and CD8+ cells of the peripheral blood in 22 cases of digestive tract cancer, 12 cases of lung cancer, 15 cases of thyroid cancer and 9 cases of other cancer as well as 28 cases of adult healthy subjects as controls. Diagnoses were confirmed histopathologically in all the patients. The blood samples were drawn from veins of the patients and control subjects in Pusan National University Hospital during the period from January to August, 1990. The results obtained were summarized as follows 1 1. The PNP activity was significantly increased in digestive tract cancer, lung cancer, thyroid cancer and other cancer as compared with control subject, respectively but was not different between thyroid cancer and control subjects. 2. The percentage of CD4` cells was significantly decreased o tended to be decreased in digestive tract cancer, lung cancer and other cancer as compared with control subjects, respectively but was not different between thyroid cancer and control subjects. 3. The percentage of CD8+ cells was significantly increased in digestive tract cancer, lung cancer and other cancer, and was singificantly decreased in thyroid cancer as compared with control subjects, respectively. 4. The CD4/CD8 ratio was singificantly decreased in digestive tract cancer, lung cancer and other cancer, and was signficiantly increased in thyroid cancer as compared with control subjects, respectively. On the basis of this results, it can be suggested that the PNP activity is significantly increased in patients with various cancer that are the cellular immunodysfunction status due to decreased helper/inducer T cells and increase suppressor/cytotoxic T cells or due to decreased suppressor/cytotoxic T cells.
